Poetics of the matter
Poetics of the matter
Moveo welcomes Sara Mangano and Pierre-Yves Massip, specialists in physical theatre and contemporary mime, for an immersive workshop exploring the body and matter as a form of stage language.
After 30 years of collaboration and international touring, Sara and Pierre-Yves will share their
unique approach, inspired by Marcel Marceau, Étienne Decroux and Jacques Lecoq, to reinvent the relationship to the body, the object and space.
19–20 September 2026
Saturday and Sunday: 11am–2pm & 3pm–6pm
€140 / €126 up to one month before the start of the course
Presentation
The course focuses on the study of materials, their dramatic power, their intrinsic symbolism and their physical, indeed sculptural, potential.
The study and theatrical practice of materials provide essential tools for the performer, who, through observation and performance, propels their imagination towards dimensions and realms that are often unexpected.
The actor acts and the material reacts; there are as many different reactions as there are materials.
A wide range of inspirations for character development; physical states, emotions and behavioural patterns.
We will explore the expressive possibilities offered by materials within the dialectic of will and rest, hard and soft, active and passive, etc.
On the one hand, a deliberate and active use, because we work with the material, manipulate it, transform it, sculpt it, break it, heat it, caress it, carry it, hold it, shape it, and so on.
On the other hand, for us, matter becomes a niche, a garment, a cave. It is the cocoon, the habitat, the vehicle. It is our own body, by turns granite and clay, creating metaphors and a language dear to our mime theatre.
Course Objectives
1 - To develop a scenic and physical language: explore the dramatic, symbolic and visual power of materials to enrich your performance and creativity.
2 - To acquire practical tools: mimodynamic techniques, ensemble work, lifts, the dramaturgy of materials… Keys to transforming your practice and building artistic stamina.
3 - Drawing inspiration from Bachelard’s thinking: play with dialectics (hard/soft, active/passive, will/rest) by making the material a partner in play, a habitat, a vivid metaphor.
4 - To explore collective dynamics: the workshop focuses on ensemble work, mass and volume – creating an experience that is both intimate and exuberant.
Who is this workshop for?
Amateur or professional artists (actors, dancers, puppeteers, performers, etc.) wishing to:
- Deepen their movement and physical practice
- Discover new avenues for creation through physical expression
- To draw on the experience and expertise of two committed contemporary mime artists
PROGRAMME:
- The dynamics of materials in physical theatre: how objects influence performance.
- The interplay between text and matter: linking narrative and manipulation.
- The body as matter: exploring physical metaphors.
- Group work: collective creation, lifts, and ensemble work.
